SSHS to Host Student-Led Mental Wellness Day on May 8

Steamboat Springs High School will host a Mental Wellness Day for all students on May 8, creating space for students to focus on their mental health, build resilience, and strengthen connections with peers and staff.

Mental wellness plays a critical role in student success—academically, socially, and emotionally. When students have the tools to manage stress and navigate challenges, they are better prepared to thrive both in school and beyond.

This event was designed in direct response to student feedback. Through focus groups, wellness surveys, and listening sessions with the Schecky Youth Wellness Initiative, students consistently shared a desire for more opportunities to focus on mental health during the school day. In response, SSHS worked to create a day that reflects those needs in a meaningful and engaging way.

Students have also played a leading role in planning the event. The SSHS Student Leadership class has taken this on as a major second-semester project, ensuring student voice is central to the experience. Members of Hope Squad will also help lead and support activities throughout the day.

Mental Wellness Day is made possible through the generosity of Sara Craig-Scheckman and Michael Craig-Scheckman in honor of the Craig-Scheckman Family Foundation’s 20th anniversary. The district’s partnership with the Foundation has helped expand access to mental health supports and elevate youth voice across the community.

Throughout the day, students will participate in:

  • Two keynote speakers
  • Expert-led breakout sessions focused on real-world strategies
  • Interactive and hands-on learning experiences
  • Opportunities for reflection, connection, and community-building
  • Activities, prizes, and drawings

During lunch, students will have access to:

  • On-campus food trucks
  • A live DJ
  • Games, activities, and raffle prizes

Students will register for breakout sessions beginning April 10, with 41 session options available. Attendance will be taken throughout the day.

Families are encouraged to talk with their students about their session choices and support full participation. The day is designed to be both engaging and impactful, giving students practical tools they can carry with them beyond high school.
